Jasmin and Manuel’ s contest, Taking roots, organized to celebrate their first Labna blogiversary, was definitely my cup of tea for two reasons:
- the roots are essential for all of us, your family build them up for you day after day, they give you the sap to grow, the minerals from the home soil to fortify you and the strength necessary to let you fly;
- the roots are magical, they contain the power of Mother Earth, they are used in potions and spells, in fairies’ decoctions, they are the basic ingredients of the people of the woods diet, the long legs of the trees supposed to defend the forest.

As you may already know, there are two days I really love throughout the year. The first one is my birthday, when, at the end of July, I love to enjoy the last moments of sleep under my fresh linen sheets, savouring every second before the big day begins. The second one is Christmas: obviously there’s a totally different set. I’m wrapped into my colorful duvet, looking outside the window at the white sky. My mind rings with jolly tunes and runs to my letter to Santa, to the gifts under the Christmas tree, to the upcoming big feast with my dear ones. As soon as my sister jumps onto my bed to drag me to the living room where my family is already waiting, the sleep is rubbed away from the sleepy eyes, my rebel curls are combed into a more civil aspect and a persistent smile rises to light up my face throughout the day. Last week of work before Christmas, here we start to deal with dinners to exchange greetings with colleagues, friends from elementary school, high school and college, family friends, close and less close relatives, new acquaintances and happy hours under the Christmas tree. This is the reason I’m presenting you a recipe to face this social life alarm: the idea is to have a light meal with a festive character and the subtle scent of the upcoming Christmas.
I really like the two cooking methods I used to make this dish. Baking the butternut squash with a bunch of spices before making the soup not only makes the house smell good, but brings out the flavours, enhances and enriches every aroma. The chicken meatballs are boiled in the vegetable stock, instead of being fried or baked. This keeps them soft, delicate, with a hint of orange that recalls the butternut soup.

This was my letter to Santa Claus more or less 20 years ago, when 9-year-old girls were still 9 year old girls.
Dear Santa, I’ve been a good girl this year, so would you mind bringing me some cute dishes and bowls to play in my small kitchen? Marta and I have so much fun pretending to cook in my granny’s shed, I would love some pretty dishes and a few small bowls with little cute flowers, or maybe a tray with lovely tea cups, so we can play the ladies! Thank you Santa Claus! Ah! If you have still room on your sleigh, can you bring me a Barbie doll as well? the one with long blond hair I keep looking at in Aunt Lella’s shop window! and, do not forget, bring also a little gift for Claudia, even though she is still a little tiny baby!
Nowadays, little girls write letters to Santa, asking for mobile phones, interactive games or mp3 players. I was an old style little woman, and, to be honest, I fear I’m still an old-fashioned girl! If I had to write my letter to Santa now, I believe it would have the same tone of voice and I would likely ask for pots and pans again! Ok, maybe now I would call them props, or cocottes, but in conclusion nothing has changed much. I still have so much fun cooking, and I still need cute flowery pots and dished to do that!
