Buckwheat flour breakfast muffins

Date luglio 16, 2011

You can say whatever you want, you can say that turning on the oven in summer is a sacrilege, that this is the season of ice cream and cold drinks at sunset on a terrace by the sea, with golden sand on your feet. But just consider for a while the everyday life, the reality of those who still get up every day, leave an already scorching bed and go to the office.

Add that the office does not have air conditioning and that your faithful partner is a bottle of jasmine green tea, light and refreshing. You don’t have a problem in finding a car park, because it is everyday granted, though under a merciless sun in a desert and tree-less countryside square. Considered all the elements, do you want to deprive a poor girl of one of the few comforts left?

If I could, I would really choose a life of beach laziness, fresh linen shirts and salads made of tomatoes from the garden, but my holidays are still a bit far, although I can finally see them on the horizon. Therefore, undaunted, I carry on with my habits, and one of them is to turn on the oven and make the muffins for breakfast, to start a new day on a positive and healthy note.

Naked zucchini blossom and potato quiche*

Date luglio 14, 2011

In the winter I was able to write bilingual posts in the evening, after dinner, with a steaming cup of tea at my side and a wool blanket on my legs: what a nineteenth-century image, isn’t it? shall I add a gleaming candle, too? I just want to stress that I used to write my posts on the PC, not by hand on a parchment paper with a pen dipped in ink, so, for the record…

As I have already told you, in these days I’m useless. Just after dinner, my eyes start to close, I feel the urge to lie down outside in the fresh evening air to read a book, to watch a cop tv show with my dad (anyone mad about Chicago Code like me?) or just to do something that is the most precious thing: nothing. A pure, quiet, precious nothing.

On the other hand, sometimes I also feel like going out, because this summer is slipping out of my hands: I want to see my friends, make plans about our upcoming holidays and enjoy Siena or Florence by night, with the lights that turn the Arno and Piazza del Campo in a postcard.

Light rice pudding

Date luglio 12, 2011

It’s hot, it’s really hot here. I’m tired and I keep forgetting things and making silly mistakes. I live in a constant haze, trying to figure out how not to make collide dreams, reality, expectations and future projects. Maybe I just need holidays, after all!

Today I just want to take the chance to introduce you the new G2Kitchen issue, fresh, summery and made with the usual passion and enthusiasm. Unfortunately this will be the last issue, it has been an extraordinary experience, I lived for a while the dream of working in a real editorial staff! As usual, here you can read one of my recipes from the magazine translated in English.

Green! Pasta with pea pesto and crunchy bacon

Date luglio 7, 2011

I often create recipes based on the dominant color of an ingredient. Some time ago, for example, starting from the deep golden yellow of the corn flour I made one of my favorite desserts, a corn cake with limoncello, and since then I have repeated it in more than a special occasion. This time the main theme is green.

The peas are green, just shelled, they are crisp and sweet and make that fun sound when they fall into the bowl, just like gentle and muffled rain.

The table setting is green, green from the heavy glass to the small bowls to serve individually crispy bacon and goat cheese to match the pea pesto. The result is a fresh and carefree table, where everyone is welcomed and doesn’t panic if the tablecloth gets stained with the pesto, everything is nothing but green!

The green, in all its nuances, has always been my favourite colour: the tender green of the spring new grass, the deep green of the Northern Europe forests, full of stories and legends, the emerald green of the tropical seas and the acid green of my favourite t-shirt as a child.

Summer fruit pie with Jamie’s old-fashioned sweet shortcrust pastry

Date luglio 5, 2011

When the summer shines throughout the season with joy and pride, I have just a humble desire: a rainy afternoon. Wait, wait, do not misunderstand me. I love long sunny days, a refreshing shadow under the lime trees and my toes curling with pleasure into the soft sea sand. For all the year I long for naked legs in the night breeze, curls lightened by the sun and the salty water and the warm wheat smell sliding into the open car windows. I even stand patiently the heat, after all it’s summer, and it will last just for a few months, so you have to enjoy it to the fullest.

But once in a while I yearn for a rainy afternoon. As a matter of fact the rain would refresh the air, clean the skies and wash down the dust from the wood, leaving a sparkling scenery and brighter colours after the storm, not to mention a long sleep night, covered for once with the cotton sheet.

But something else happens in my mind. First of all, I will enjoy summer even more after the rain, well aware of the transience of the good sunny weather. Then, I will suddenly realize that autumn is not so far, so it’s time to make plans not to be catched by surprise by the new season.
